Intel Core i3-2350M Mobile processor (FF8062700995906)

Specifications

Intel Mobile Core i3-2350M is a dual-core microprocessor for mid-class notebooks. This chip was spotted at the beginning of May 2011 along with i5-2430M model in specifications of HP ProBook 4530s and ThinkPad Edge E520 laptops, and it is expected to launch in the third quarter 2011. Based on Sandy Bridge microarchitecture, the CPU packs two cores, graphics processing unit (GPU), memory controller, PCI Express interface, and Direct Media Interface on a chip. The microprocessor operates at 2.3 GHz, that is 100 MHz faster than the 2330M model, and 200 MHz faster than the 2310M. The 2350M has three cache levels, where each CPU core has its own 64 KB first level and 256 KB second level caches, and the cores share 3 MB third level cache. The L3 cache is also shared with the graphics processing unit. The GPU is HD-capable, and supports 3D acceleration and such video processing features, as Quick Sync, Clear Video HD, and InTru 3D. On-chip memory controller has two channels, and works with DDR3 memory. The CPU supports Intel 64, SIMD streaming extensions up to SSE4, and AVX instructions. Intel i3-2350M incorporates VT-x virtualization and Hyper-Threading. The latter feature, Hyper-Threading technology, is not supplied on budget Celeron and Pentium processors, and may boost CPU performance in multi-threaded applications by up to 20%. The Core i3-2350M accommodates a handful of instruction extensions and technologies, but not all of them. For example, the chip does not incorporate Turbo Boost and Vpro technologies, and does not have AES acceleration instructions.

Intel i3-2350M includes several low-power states, that are useful for saving battery power when one or two cores are idle. To reduce power consumption in active mode, the microprocessor uses Enhanced SpeedStep technology. To achieve power savings, this feature lowers core voltage and frequency of the cores. Thermal Design Power of this CPU is 35 Watt.

The Core i3-2350M is produced in micro-PGA package, and it requires socket G2 motherboards. The processors in this PGA package are easy to replace or upgrade, and can be also used to upgrade slower CPUs in similar package. Main performance advantages of Intel i3-2350M model over Mobile Pentiums are due to higher clock frequency, and addition of Hyper-Threading technology. This model has even greater advantage over mobile Celerons, owing to 50% larger size of L3 cache, higher frequency and Hyper-Threading.

News

Oct 06, 2011: Earlier this week, Intel introduced new microprocessors for mainstream and ultra-low power notebooks. They were launched without announcement, and without update of the official pricelist. In cases like this, we usually wait until Intel ARK product database is updated with specifications of new models before reporting on them. In this case first four CPUs were added to Intel website on Monday and Tuesday. These were Pentium 967 and B960, Core i5-2430M and i7-2670QM. Since then two new microprocessors appeared in the ARK database, Core i3-2350M and i3-2367M.

Jun 16, 2011: In the past few months, we published several stories detailing soon to be released Sandy Bridge mobile microprocessors. The stories referred to budget Celeron and Pentium CPUs, mainstream Core-branded processors for mid-class laptops, and ultra low voltage (ULV) 2nd generation Core chips for thin and light notebooks. Using notebook product availability dates, our sources, and information, previously disclosed by Fudzilla, we came up with a list of processors that will be launched this month. The list includes ULV Celeron 847, embedded Celeron 847E and B810E, Pentium B940, embedded Core i3-2330E and i3-2340UE, and ULV Core i5-2557M, i7-2637M and i7-2677M.

May 05, 2011: In the second half of April, we published two stories about upcoming Pentium B940 and B950 mobile processors, as well as Core i3-2330M. Details about these microprocessors were discovered in specifications of new Fujitsu, HP and Lenovo notebooks, and, based on May release date of one of those notebooks, we presumed that the processors will be introduced in May. Recently we found two new second-generation CPUs, Core i3-2350M and Core i5-2430M.
