AMD Athlon II 160u - AD160UEAK13GQ

Specifications

Athlon II 160u is the first member of Athlon II family of single-core ultra-low voltage microprocessors. The 160u is built on K10 microarchitecture, and integrates one CPU core, DDR2/DDR3 memory controller and one HyperTransport link on a die. The processor operates at 1.8 GHz, and utilizes 128 KB L1 and 1 MB L2 caches to improve system performance. The Athlon II supports all basic features of K10 micro-architecture:
  • 64 instruction set allows the CPU to run 64-bit Operating Systems, which increases system performance in comparison with 32-bit OSes.
  • Enhanced Virus Protection prevents execution of unauthorized code in data memory, which stops many current and future computer viruses.
  • Virtualization Technology improves performance of software that runs programs or operating systems in a virtual box.

The processor also supports SSE instructions from MMX and up to SSE3, as well as 3DNow! and four SSE4a instructions (SSE4a shouldn't be confused with SSE4). The Athlon II 160u incorporates Cool'n'Quiet 3.0 technology, which uses a number of techniques to reduce power consumption when parts of the CPU are not active. Thanks to its low frequency, single-core implementation and power-saving features, the 160u model has only 20 Watt Thermal Design Power. The Athlon II 160u is manufactured in 938-pin micro-PGA package, that visually looks almost indistinguishable from the 940-pin package. The CPU may work with DDR2 memory in socket AM2+ motherboards, or DDR3 memory in socket AM3 motherboards. The microprocessor was shipped only as an OEM processor in budget systems, such as Acer eMachines EL1332-E12 and eMachines ET1352.

The Athlon II 160u features one operational core, but it has, in fact, two physical cores on a die. The second core is disabled, and can be unlocked using BIOS ACC or similar feature. When unlocked, the processor is identified by BIOS as "AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 260u Processor". Unlocking of the second core is not guaranteed, and may make the processor unstable.

The purpose of the Athlon II 160u microprocessor is to provide sufficient performance in basic tasks, like e-mail or browsing, while using very low power. For this reason it's impossible to compare the 160u with other AMD and Intel microprocessors. First, Intel doesn't make any single core desktop CPUs. AMD does sell desktop Sempron line of single-core processors, but they have much higher Thermal Design Power. Ignoring the fact that we compare different class CPUs, performance-wise the Athlon II 160u is 30% - 35% slower than Sempron 140. That result is expected because the Sempron incorporates the same features as the Athlon II, and has 50% higher core frequency.

Single or dual core

2010-06-07 09:58:01
Posted by: Georgios

The AMD site states that this processor is a a dual core processor.
What can one believe? Single or dual core?
NB: Windows 7 identifies the processor as a single core processor...

Response: "AMD Athlon II Processor Model Numbers and Comparisons" page on AMD site is incorrect. 160u is a single-core processor.
